Champaign, OH:  Young Girl Sunday Blues

One side of me is filled with brightness…
no matter what I might say…
The days are made with waterfall colors…
(Young Girl Sunday Blues-Jefferson Airplane)

Another ode to Jefferson Airplane…and, it’s Sunday…and, I am always filled with brightness, rarely the blues, and, I really do view things in watercolor vibes…

I am just enjoying the ending to a fun weekend that was filled with old friends who descended on me, Friday night. A great weekend of amazing Bread Heads who flooded my shop, and an all around, feel good kind of couple of days.

I am ending my weekend with dinner in the oven, and a glass of wine in my hand. I am ordering from the market, and smiling at how good it feels to be able to order, locally, to know that I am getting the best of the best, and to know that I am shopping at my leisure, with an emphasis on nutrition and affordability.

Let us take you on an ordering adventure. You won’t be sorry. You will enjoy the ease and the products, AND, you can feel good about all of your choices!

See…nothing to feel blue about, here. Only watercolors and rainbows…

Peace, Love, Good Vibes…
Cosmic Pam

Market News

Hello!

What a difference a week can make! From 8" of snow to 70 degrees! We hope you have all enjoyed the roller coaster – sure keeps things interesting!

We have a great selection for you this week! Oyster Mushrooms are back from local farm Whispering Creek! These fresh mushrooms are delicate and tender and can cook very quickly. There is a recipe for a simple saute, but also consider using them in a frittata, omelet, risotto, lasagna, or a hearty salad! Keep them in the refrigerator in the paper bag, and they will keep for up to a week.

We are on a every-other-week schedule! This means that after this week, we will have a week off, and will be delivering again the following week, February 17th. It is a good idea to stock up on goodies! Get your eggs, frozen meats, and veggies to last you through the two weeks. The greens will keep well in the fridge in a plastic bag.

There are some new items our vendors have listed! The Bloomy Rind has all natural salami made from Tennessee beef. This, along with the crackers and her great selection of cheese makes for a stunner of a cheese tray! And don’t forget the sweets! There is some chocolate bark and caramel sauce up there too!

Wedge Oak Farm has a good selection of duck this week – whole and parts. Consider this as an alternative to your chicken routine!

And as always, there is Dozen Bakery’s fresh baked bread and cookies, and Bear Creek Farm’s great beef selection.

Market News

I’ve just arrived home from a week in Lexington, Kentucky, where I served on the staff of the annual conference for the Southern Sustainable Agriculture Working Group. It’s one of my favorite events, and this year was the largest one ever with over 1400 farmers from across the south and beyond gathering to share stories of failure and success, learn from those, and inspire each other to return home and grow even more real food for their communities. The days there are extremely long, and I’m ready to drop into sleep as I type this, but it is always well worth it.

I haven’t had a chance to go over the listings this week in any great detail to gather notes for this week’s mailing, but I do see lots of great food available. I did get contacted a few days ago by a group in town who has begun the process of putting together a bulk order of solar energy collectors for houses and businesses around Athens. They’re called Solarize Athens, and have a coalition of public and private alternative energy and community groups behind them. If you’ve been considering converting to solar generated electricity, or are just curious what it would take, you’ve got two months to get in with them. The first phase of assembling the coalition and finding an equipment supplier and installation company has already happened, and now they’re putting together the bulk order with them for submission on March 31. For more information, check out their website at http://www.solarizeathens.com.

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market has closed for the winter. You can watch for news during the offseason on their website. The other area markets are also all closed for the season, I believe. If you know of any winter markets operating, please let me know. And they might all be closed, but we’ll be here all year round!

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
