Siloam Springs, AR:  Online Market - Inventory Update

Apologies for the late opening! Thanks for continuing to support our market.

New Field Farm's Online Market:  The big chill

Good morning,

This cool weather has slowed some crops down, especially cukes, squash, and beans. You should ask for beans in the comment section again because I don’t want to guess how many I’ll find.

Arugula is back this week, and yellow onions and leeks have been added.

There’s a little broccoli again. A porcupine helped itself to a number of heads. I’m going to put up a fabric wall around all the brassicas like we did for the Brussels Sprouts earlier in the season. (And the porcupines are going to pay for it.)

Regarding the ordering deadline, to avoid the complications of late orders I’m going to close ordering on the site after 8:00 Thursday morning.

Thank you for your orders.

Tim

ALFN Local Food Club:  IMPORTANT ALFN INFO! -Please Read to End-

Dear ALFN Members,

I hope that this finds you all enjoying your week. My name is Tifany Hamlin and I am the current Chair of the Board of Directors for ALFN. The board has been working diligently to lead our organization and we want to update all of you on our efforts and where the organization stands.

One of our core values is transparency. The board is made up of nine highly engaged individuals who love ALFN and have dedicated many hours of time over the last two years to address some of our key challenges. We want to share with all of you what we are facing.

Market membership and sales trends

While ALFN provides several services to the local food community, we are solely funded through the online market’s sales. Since at least 2014, we have witnessed a slow decline in memberships and sales. The board has addressed many issues that we believe may have contributed to this decline: redefining organizational mission, vision, and core values, implementing quality control measures, marketing through online and traditional channels, and building community partnerships. Yet we still have not seen an increase in market memberships or sales. (If you would like a copy of our Customer Analytics report please email Claire at littlerockfoodclub@gmail.com.)

We need your help in promoting ALFN. Below are several ways you can help immediately.
1) Tell your friends about ALFN! Feel free to copy and paste this content for your emails:

Dear friend,

You’ve probably heard me mention the Arkansas Local Food Network before as one of my go-to resources for local foods. I love the ease of shopping online for Arkansas goods like farm fresh eggs, in-season produce, and handmade soaps. In fact, ALFN has the BEST selection of Arkansas produced goods of any other market.

You can try ALFN for two weeks before you pay the membership fee of $7.50 per month. I’d like to invite you to see what ALFN is all about! Here’s a link to their website: https://arkansaslocalfoodnetwork.org/online-market/. Let me know if you have any questions!

2) If you are on social media, please follow ALFN on Facebook and Instagram. Like and share every post from ALFN to your newsfeed.

Facebook: @ARSustainability
Instagram: @ arlocalfoodnetwork

3) We have flyers to share! Please pickup flyers at market pickup and post at your place of work, schools, churches, coffee shops – anywhere that has a community bulletin board.

We want to hear from you.

ALFN is made of people who care deeply about the organization and our commitment to supporting our local community by providing access to locally produced goods. Several of our board members will be available at the Saturday morning pickup on September 9, 2017 in the Library at Christ Episcopal Church.
Please stop by to share your thoughts, concerns, and comments in person. It’s going to take all of us to turn things around.

If you are unable to visit with us in person, please feel free to send your comments to me at my personal email address: tifany.hamlin@gmail.com. I will compile all comments for the board’s review at our next scheduled meeting on Tuesday, September 19.

We are committed to ALFN and ongoing communication.

The board will be implementing regular communication with all members through a Board Update to be sent quarterly from the board Chair.

I believe that we have an opportunity to grow our organization but we have to do it together. The board can’t do it alone. Our program manager can’t do it alone. We have to do this together. I know I speak on behalf of the entire board of directors when I say that we appreciate all of our members and how dedicated you all are to supporting ALFN. We are grateful for all of the efforts you all make to the success of ALFN!

On behalf of the entire Board,

Tifany Hamlin

Old99Farm Market:  Old 99 FArm, week of Aug 27 2017

We’ve got a sizeable number of fruits to offer this year: 5 types of berries, apples (soon), peaches, cantaloupe, watermelon, and pears (soon). All organic, grown with attention to the soil nutrients following Michael Phillip’s biological approach.

We have peaches, cantaloupe and watermelon: first time ever! Also blackberries and aronia berries. We can offer the following crops: new harvest chard and kale, beet root and tops, potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, beans (yellow, green and purple varieties) sorrel, New Zealand spinach, rhubarb, lovage, sweet cicely, arugula, basil, parsley, purslane, chives, cilantro, bulb onions and peppers.

Eggs are smaller than usual still, but plentiful. Packed as mixed weight dozens averaging to meet or exceed Canada Grade A standard.

I need to remind to order your meat: roasting chicken, beef and pork for delivery later in the year.

From the Permaculture Apprentice blogsite, some good advice: focus on five basic categories in daily resilience building: anything that has to do with water systems, infrastructure, growing or storing food, the farm economy, and expanding one’s social network and capital.

Says blog author Will Horvath, "If you’re like me and sometimes have a hard time ignoring all the negativity around us, try to focus your attention on what is within your control and influence. Your efforts matter.

When you do feel anxious, make sure you actually do something that day that moves you towards a more resilient situation. Set your bar low, so low, that doing small things is a win for the day.

Understand that to be really resilient and capable of handling things, no matter what happens, you’ll need to build inner resilience and be comfortable with being uncomfortable. Tools and gadgets are great, but your brain is the ultimate tool that needs sharpening daily.

In all of this, don’t forget to be grateful for the abundance in life you DO already have. It’s easy to be fearful, but we need reminding to be grateful. So, when you feel bad or down, reflect on the good things you have in your life.

Finally, one of the most important components of resilience is a community. Connect with others and start building a parallel system that will ensure you and the people around you have a good life, no matter what happens on the world stage."

Buford Locally Grown :  Volunteers Needed Tomorrow & 9/5

Hi Everyone,

I really need a volunteer to cover the 3 pm to 4 pm shift tomorrow.

Also, I only have 1 volunteer signed up for the 9/5 market. If I don’t have enough volunteers I will just assume most people are out of town due to Labor Day holiday and close down the market next week. I’ll look at the volunteer sign up on Thursday and let everyone if we will have market on 9/5 or not.

We are a volunteer run market and I can’t do this without your help!! I’m so grateful for those that help every week but I don’t want it to become a burden on them. If you haven’t volunteered yet and have some time when you pick up please consider helping out. It’s a great way to meet other members and help your community!

Here’s the link to our Volunteer Sign Up: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a44aea623a7fa7-volunteer

Thank you for your support!
