Market News

It’s been the sort of rain lately where even the best drainage in your gardens isn’t enough to get the job done. It’s been a cold rain, too, thanks to the weird combination of massive hurricane and a perfectly placed jet stream bringing all the moisture right to us (and poor South Carolina). This may well spell the end for any summer veggies growing outside — they’re able to tolerate cool nights so long as the days are nice and warm, but cold soggy roots are just the worst for them. You may see some stragglers, but the tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers will soon get a lot scarcer.

One favorite product we do now have plenty of is salmon and halibut from Doug Resetarits. He and his family are back from another successful fishing season in Alaska, and they stocked up a freezer here in town with the first delivery of their catch. The halibut is back, along with several cuts of salmon, including packages of ground salmon perfect for making your own burgers, croquettes, and other preparations. I expect he’ll be keeping the freezer well-stocked until he runs out again, just in time to go catch more next summer.

Another grower that’s returned to us is Burnell Farms. They’ve been out for quite a while with some medical issues that just made all the manual labor that goes into small-scale vegetable production impossible. The surgeons have been doing a great job and have cleared the way for some light farm work to resume.

That’s it for the news this week. Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it! You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market from the Athens Land Trust is open Saturday mornings and their farm stand is open Tuesday afternoons. They have a website too. A new Athens Sunday market has opened up at the Classic Center, every Sunday from 11 to 4 now through October. They have a website here: http://www.sundaycentermarket.com. The Comer Farmers Market is open in downtown Comer on Saturday mornings. The Oconee County farmers market is open Saturday mornings in front of the Oconee County Courthouse in Watkinsville. The Shields Ethridge Cultivator Market is held monthly in Jefferson. If you know of any markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Lake Placid Online Farmer's Market:  No October Market, mark your calendars for the November Market!

Hi everyone,

As you might have assumed, we will not be having an October market. We are currently in the process of establishing a new payment system; I am not at the Skate Shop much anymore (I started a new job) so we are working on creating a system that is easier and more efficient for anyone. We expect the system to be an online payment system, and we will be in touch when this is established with information on how to pay for your orders with this new method.

We look forward to seeing you and thank you for your patience. The next Market is November 6-11, so please note the dates and watch your email as it gets closer for info on the new payment system and a listing of available items!

Best,
Christie

Champaign, OH:  End Of The Road Farm Tour!!!

We would like to invite the virtual market vendors and customers to join us out on our farm Saturday October 10th at 2pm for a sorghum-making demonstration and a guided tour! Our draft horse, Tony, will help us squeeze the juice out of the sorghum cane, and we’ll be cooking it down to make sweet syrup – an interesting process if you’ve never seen it in person. End of the Road Farm may be a work in progress, but we, along with our three young children, have a lot of fun and enjoy working full-time on our homestead. There will be several samples of sorghum goodies to try – we’d love to meet you if you’re able to come!

Lee and Jennifer Ruff

If you want a fun day, full of farm love, and just a real good time…plan on attending this farm tour!! It was great fun, last year, and you don’t want to miss the fun!!

Peace, Love, Good Vibes…

Market News

Hello!

It has been a cool and rainy weekend, the perfect cozy transition to Fall weather! Now we can surely anticipate the leaves starting to change color and begin to drop as we head into October.

This week we have an amazing selection of food for you – so many good greens, winter squashes, sweet potatoes, and other delicious produce to keep you going as we head into the shortening days.

Rocky Glade Farm has up both ginger and Thai Ginger, or Galangal. Galangal is called “khaa” in Thailand and is not the same as ginger. However, the cooking process for this Thai food ingredient is the same as that for cooking ginger. Galangal has a distinct peppery flavor and is used in curry pastes, stir fried dishes and soups. Some grocery stores also stock dried galangal, but you should always use fresh galangal if available.

These dark, colder mornings make us really appreciate our coffee! We are so proud of the two coffees we carry. We love our locally roasted, organic coffee by Nashville’s pioneering coffee biz, Bongo Java. We also are carrying a locally roasted coffee that is put out by The Nashville Food Project.
“Brew Unto Others” is whole bean coffee, locally roasted by hand, certified organic and fair-trade certified. All proceeds from sales through Fresh Harvest go to The Nashville Food Project For more info and volunteer opportunities visit thenashvillefoodproject.org

We appreciate your support, and will see you on Wednesday!

Dawson Local Harvest:  Produce, Pumpkins, and more!

Dawson Local Harvest for October 9th

Produce, Pumplins, and More!

HI EVERYONE!

Maaybe the rain is finally over and we can get back to living. And eating. LEILANI’S can help with that with a fresh crop of fresh, crisp Green Beans, and for something a bit more exotic, try the Amethyst Purple Beans. You can prepare them just like regular Beans. Or combine them for a Bean Salad. Also added is the multi-colored Swiss Chard to join the green-leaf Peppermint Swiss Chard

BRADLEY’S has added Pumpkins to their Fall listings. These are “cooking” pumpkins which last a lot longer (and taste better) than regular “ornamental” pumpkins, and they’re less expensive, too. They also look very nice themselves as decorative accents. Check them out.

HANALEI BATH has a charming new decorative soap, their Litsea Lavender Cupcake Soap. You can see a picture in the Featured section.

THE MARKET WILL OPEN at 8pm!

REMEMBER! You can order until Tuesday night at 8pm. Pick up your order at Leilani’s Gardens Friday afternoons from 4 to 7pm.

You’ll find the DAWSON LOCAL HARVEST at http://dawsonville.locallygrown.net

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible! We guarantee your satisfaction with all products in the DAWSON LOCAL HARVEST.

Have a happy and healthy week!

As Always….

Please share with friends and family about us so that we can give more people the opportunity to buy and eat healthy! Local farmers need our support to keep providing us with all the fresh foods! If we don’t give them enough business, it’s hard for them to continue to deliver to us. Please let’s not let that happen! Tell your friends about us so we can keep the Growers supported as this is how they make their living.

Thank you to all of you who support Gwinnett Locally Grown!

If there is something you’d like to see in the Market, please let me know! I would love your input!

The Market is extending their hours! The Market will now be open from 4:00 to 7:00pm!
